Taco Tour: Jax Edition

If it’s a Tuesday, then it’s pretty much a no-brainer that tacos should be on the menu! I personally feel like true love comes from amazing tacos so, I knew my food adventure for September had to include one of my most beloved meals. After many suggestions from my social media friends and general curiosity, I went on a search to find some of the best tacos along the St. John’s River here in Jax. I was not able to visit all the places I wanted to but, I have compiled a ranking for my fellow taco lovers.

Best Pollo (Chicken) Tacos

One Night Taco Stand: Topping the list for best chicken tacos is One Night Taco Stand located in the mandarin neighborhood (2nd location in Orange Park off Wells Rd). One Night Taco Stand has been a regular favorite of mine since quarantine and I even experienced their epic Cinco de Mayo block party. The Shroom is a specialty taco filled with grilled chicken and mushrooms then topped with melted cheese. This specialty chicken taco has a sensational balance of flavors and texture from the chicken and mushroom combo.

Top to bottom: The Shroom, Fiery Fish Taco, and Surf & Turf Taco

Best Carne (Steak) Tacos

El Castillo Taqueria: One of my must-have orders at any taco place is always a steak taco. Since I tried a steak taco at each taco place I visited, it was a tough competition but, El Castillo took the crown. I love a real authentic tacos and, if you also love traditional Mexican taco with just cilantro and onions as the topping, this is the place to go. These tacos were made to order in the small kitchen visible for all customers to see. Both the fajita-style and callejero style steak tacos were amazing

Left to Right: Fajita steak (gringo style), chicken (callejero style), and steak (callejero style)

Best Fish Tacos

Señor Loco Tacos & Tequila: If I am getting tacos, I am always in search of a good fish taco! There is something about perfectly flaky fish grilled or blackened that makes me do the happy dance as I take a bite. Señor Loco is one of the newer taco places in town and I had been eager to try out and, I am happy that I did. They have a sizable patio for social distancing approved dining and a Taco Tuesday special each week (sadly, it doesn’t feature my fav specialty taco)

Left to Right: US-Mex Taco (Steak and Shrimp) and Vallarta Taco (Mahi Fish)

Best Overall Tacos

El Agave Azul: It was really hard selecting this restaurant (Food Truck too!) for an individual award because it is just all-around amazing! If you want authentic tacos made to order, then there is not much competition outside of El Agave. The steak taco was so flavorful, and the shrimp taco had the perfect amount of shrimp. The menu item that kept me coming back before trying all the places on my list were the Birria tacos. The newest taco obsession is Birria tacos, and El Agave does not disappoint with this delicious meaty treat served with consommé on the side to dip that is just as flavorful and meaty as the taco. They have a bomb Taco Tuesday deal in their store front that you shouldn’t hesitate to take advantage of. If you see their food truck around town, just hop in line and enjoy the greatness!

Honorable Mentions

  • Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant: This place has always been a fav and they are a great Tuesday night spot featuring taco and drink specials. I enjoyed the surf and turf taco and Bang Bang Shrimp Taco
  • Cantina Laredo: I love this upscale Mexican restaurant that has one of the best happy hours and ladies night in town. I always order the Pescado (fish) tacos with top shelf guacamole to start
  • Burrito Gallery: This local favorite is a must go even if you just want to feel cool on the rooftop of the Brooklyn location. I can never get enough of the Grilled Veggie and Blackened Shrimp Tacos
  • Lola’s: They were having a really rough day during my Taco Tour but I will let them redeem themselves at a later date

There are so many wonderful restaurants here on the First Coast especially local that are waiting for you to try them out. I couldn’t try all of the tacos I wanted in town but I got a pretty good start and I am ready to continue the journey to find the best tacos in the 904. What places do you think should have made the list?

My Soul Is Crying

A page from my diaryJune 2020

God, my soul is crying. Every part of me is weeping! To be Black in America is a blessing disguised as a wicked curse. I have so much pride in who I am but I fear being black continuously. We have been on a stay at home order for months due to the Coronavirus with little to no relief is given by the government, then a string of wrongful deaths of MY BLACK People by racist AND cops now has our country torn. The peaceful protest and riots of the weekend show we are tired. Tired of being treated less than and pretending everything is ok. We are letting our country burn in hopes that as the phoenix something new will be rebirthed. I hate to see my people suffer! I hate how real racial tension is but hating the problem doesn’t stop it. God, I pray that there is a transformation in this land I call home, the only home I have ever known. God, I pray that you reveal to the seemingly blind the oppression in the world that they have the privilege to ignore. I wish I was as lucky as them, to pretend that injustice doesn’t exist. But as a Black woman in America, I have experienced the pain first hand since childhood like so many of my black brothers and sisters. God my whole being grieves! I have experienced every emotion from rage, pride, and disgust this past month. God grant me peace, renew my hope, and God please bless America.

That Rona and Other Pet Peeves

As I head into my fifth week of a stay at home order due to COVID-19 or coronavirus, guys I’m tired! I feel blessed that at this time I have job security and can work safely from my home while essential workers must risk their life daily and millions of Americans go without work altogether. With all of the talk about trump checks and travel cancellation, I decided to push through the heaviness in the air and share my feelings about the current state of the year 2020 and what I am really tired of!

  1. Netflix/Hulu/Disney+: Anybody who knows me is aware that I don’t do TV or movies. I get this form of screen time at most once a month but often only every other month. Y’all I have watched 5 movies in the past 3 weeks and my mind is blown that I can even do it. I have never been the person to watch a show just because everyone is talking about it so I have still managed to keep my weekly tv hours low but I fell into a trap or two. I tried to tell myself I would stream a show or movie with someone but to be honest I’m not because I already need a break from the TV
  2. Conspiracy Theories: Y’all I love a good read even a good documentary but I just can not handle scrolling down my timeline another day to read the crazy conspiracy theories y’all have floating around. We are in the middle of a GLOBAL pandemic as in countries all over the world are facing this same virus but we are finding anything to blame it on except a poor health care system, poor government regulations, racial and wealth disparities, and slow nation-wide response. But I will let y’all continue to argue over 5G towers, human guinea pigs, and vegan superpowers.
  3. Don’t Rush Challenge: Ok it was real cute at first but ya’ll know how to run something until its all the way broke down on social media! I enjoyed that song and now I dread hearing it at this point. You guys have managed to make remix after remix for young men, nurses, doctors, families, moms, old men and I am tired of it all! I hope that this week somebody makes up a new challenge for me to get tired of because I am about to starting muting this one as of today because I am done!
  4. Instastories Challenges: During the first week in the house the pushup challenge was cute and the shot challenge was manageable. But as we cross this one month mark I don’t want to get tagged in any more challenges to do anything on camera! My story needs to consist of me looking my past best on throwback and not my current crispy dry hair and persistently in pajamas self.
  5. Lack of Care: I have certainly take my share of maybe unnecessary trips to the grocery store or to pick up food. Despite an occasional in-home house meet up with a friend or two I can not understand people who take no precautions and continue with life as usual. I have seen way too many videos over the past few weeks of block parties, mansion parties, and large hangouts in public places. I barely want to wear my clothes into the house after being out but people are throwing huge gatherings as if black people are not dying at a disproportionate rate.

You guys may similarly be tired of these same things as we face at least a few more weeks safely in our homes. It may seem as if the only thing we have to do now is to scroll through social media, make Tik Toks, and stream every show and movie we can think of but don’t forget to prioritize other forms of self-care. I separate from screen time by taking walks, exercising, reading and journaling. Whatever you choose to do with your newly discovered free time if you have it just make the best if it. -Jaz

Doing Life Together

At the beginning of each year as people all over the world made their New Years Resolution and created their vision boards I began to reflect on my life. This year instead of being consumed with thoughts of career goals, weight loss, and savings I thought about relationships. 2019 was the definition of transition in my life. I changed careers, started this blog, and the various relationships in my life.

Relationship- (noun) the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected.

Oxford Dictionary

When I read the definition of relationship and reflected on the various individuals that have been uniquely weaved into my life I got stuck on the word connected. So many times we as humans cling to relationships with mates and friends that are void of connection. As I laid in my bed silently meditating and then abruptly getting lost in my thoughts I drew a mental picture of all the connections I had truly made over my 29 years of life. Should I still be texting this guy, should I schedule a dinner date with her, have I grown apart from them is all I could hear in my head. Then I had to make the tough decisions that everybody has to at one point in their life with any intimate relationship romantic in nature or not. I asked myself if it was time to build or to move on with each person I had a relationship with, and you need to do the same! I decided that this year, my feelings mattered, my desires mattered, that I mattered!

Connected- (adj.) brought together or into contact so that a real or notional link is established

Oxford Dictionary

Recently I read a blog about how adult friendships were so much harder to upkeep as you get older and how you needed to have these different types of friends. I’ll agree that adult relationships can become more difficult to maintain as you have more things to balance, but I felt some way (not a good way) about the different types of friends. To me friendships are something sacred and it doesn’t matter if we only chat on the phone once a month like me and my bestie, meet up to travel like me and my girl Ci, just have drinks out on the town or meet only at the gym; my friends all have the same distinct characteristics.

  • Transparency- Romantic or platonic there is a clear level of transparency I need in every relationship. I must be able to reveal the real me and you must show me the real you even if we only meet for drinks every other Friday, once a year during the holidays, or chill every week at the house.
  • Empathy- if anybody should understand how you feel or just being able to comfort you during life rough patches it should be your friends or significant other.
  • Support- I live for helping other reach their dreams so it is vital that each person I have an intimate relationship with can be apart of my support system pushing me to higher levels as I lift them up
  • Joy- relationships can be tough but please let them be overwhelmingly filled with fun, laughter, and excitement. The right people will have you allow you to experience joy in any occasion being an expensive vacation or free walk around the neighborhood.

I know every person I have been connected with probably hasn’t had all of these qualities and you may be saying the same. Today I am committed to only nurturing relationships that have transparency, empathy, support, and joy. This means that I may have to walk away from some long-standing toxic interactions that I called friendship or look past a disagreement to mend a friendship that should have never been broken. You may think having levels of friendship will help you better navigate adult relationships but having boundaries and standards may help you more. Let’s all just decide to be good stewards of the people we choose to do life with -Jaz

Are We There Yet?

The fall and early winter was a very busy travel season for me. Between road trips and and early morning flights I had quite a few fun times with my friends. I will let you guys judge which trip is worth running back in the new year!

Waking up in Vegas

Las Vegas kicked off my end of the year city tour with a chilly start. With a can of Reign in hand I was able to do the impossible and stay up for two days straight to take in all the food and late night vibes. Drais managed to lure me in for two separate nights since I couldn’t miss a chance seeing future down south legends Migos (Chirp Chirp). Did you guys catch my adlibs? No? It’s ok if you didn’t laugh. I only won about $30 dollars at the slots but I also didn’t go broke! Notable mentions for good times and good eats are listed below

  • The Crack Shack- Yes that’s the name and yes it’s referring to cracking eggs! This chicken spot featured amazing fried chicken and I don’t even like fried chicken! I ordered a 5 piece sweet heat fried chicken basket and the flavor was right on delicious. I paired my chicken with hand-cut fries which were seasoned and went well with the house-made dipping sauces. If you’re on the Vegas strip check out The Crack Shack located inside Park MGM
  • Fresno Street- Spending a day in Old Vegas to experience the original Las Vegas Strip is a must while visiting the party capital. There is great street art to view, zip-lining, smaller casinos, and even some mom and pop restaurants to try. My friend and I enjoyed some great Thai food in a small locally owned restaurant during our time in Old Vegas which we know was made with love and care.

Booze around the world

The next big stop on my fall tour was to Disney Worlds Epcot for the Food and Wine Festival. Disney is already the most magical place in the world but the Food and Wine Fest provided next level adult fun. This year the gang definitely missed the memo on alcohol-themed group shirts but next year we will not disappoint! At Epcot, you can travel across the world in just a few hours while trying delicious cuisine and adult beverages at each stop. I personally enjoyed the chimichurri skirt steak and Swine Brine in Future World West, roasted lamb chops and sweet-and-spicy Bushberry shrimp from Australi, and red sangria from Morocco. When you go come hungry and ready to indulge with a park full of adults ready for a good time. The lines can get long at times but its nothing a great cocktail and yummy dish can’t fix. Apparently, there are rides there too so next year along with shirts we will get on at least one ride in between the endless stream of booze and baked goods. If you can’t tell already Food and Wine Fest has already made it on my 2020 bucket list and you should check it out too!

Nashville Hot Chicken and White Claw?!?

I rounded out my city tour in country music capital Nashville, Tennessee. A big group of girls decided to take on this city for a bachelorette weekend to celebrate Christal’s Last Ball (isn’t that so cute?!?). We really didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into but there were memories made that I know some people hope don’t come out during the wedding speeches. Nashville is apparently the bachelorette capital of this Nation or maybe just south of the Mason-Dixon Line but below are all the things I would do again

  • Party Barge- The highlight of our trip consisted of a cooler full of White Claw, an iPhone, a trailer hitched to a pickup truck and an aux cord. We turned heads as we partied around downtown Nashville riding on the party barge and dancing to a twerk approved Spotify playlist. Sometimes during bachelorette trips, the most fun is when it’s just the girls being our carefree selves and I think the party barge for the most epic night of our trip!
  • Belle Meade Winery- Sometimes you have to add sophisticated drinking plans during your trip and this winery was just the place. We took a food and wine pairing class where we were educated on proper tasting protocol and the best foods to pair with our wine of choice. Sight, smell, sip, savor will forever be engrained in my head before topping off my glass of wine. We enjoyed the class so much we even had to purchase some wine, jam, and cheese to take home. I can’t wait to pop open that bottle of sparkling riesling I flew back with!

My fall and early winter was definitely eventful and I honestly couldn’t even fit every road trip I took into this post but I gave you best and didn’t bore you with stories of allergic reactions on the road and how to mix Benadryl with champagne and survive. If you are thinking of any of this destinations for your 2020 travels don’t forget to check out the spots I mentioned and explore some new ones that you might stumble upon. Girl trips can be stressful if you make them that way but try to enjoy the wave as you experience life with people you love!

Life Alert!

So some of you may have been asking Jaz where have you been? (If you weren’t just don’t tell me). Well, I am back from this not too long break with major life updates. This summer I made a blog post titled Goal Digger where I reflected on how to adjust my action plan to meet the goals I set for myself in the new year. SO GUESS WHAT GUYS?!? I actually crossed some items off my list and had to take a small break for the transition. So you may be wondering girls what is this big update?!? Well after starting my seventh year in the classroom, last month I transitioned into a position with a non-profit which I am loving. Leaving the classroom was probably one of the hardest decisions of my adulthood thus far because I had to give up a profession I was comfortable with and did well in plus those amazing breaks (I’m really going to miss summer and spring break). I had to really reflect on the professional goals I had set for myself and make the decision to challenge myself to reach for the next level. When you set your New Years Resolutions over the next few weeks as we move into 2020 make sure you are measuring your actions against your goals. If you want to be somewhere else in life then get there! I have constantly been transforming over this year and it’s tough at times discovering the new you or in some cases the old you. I encourage all my readers to take those scary steps, reach out to those seemingly unreachable people, and dig deep for those goals. Until next time guys! -Jaz

Sunday Funday Bucket List

If you know me, then you know I love to have a nice fun weekend around town. Many people in Jacksonville often feel like it’s not much to do here on the weekends, so I decided to compile a list of some places and activities I enjoy when having Sunday Funday with my friends.

On Sundays We Brunch: My number one favorite Sunday Funday outing is brunch because I love breakfast food and bottomless mimosas make everything better! Here are some spots I frequent on Sundays with the gang

  1. Metro Diner: Metro is a local favorite and though they do not have bottomless mimosas, you can bring champagne to enjoy with your meal. Some of my favorite menu items include the crab cake Benedict, their famous chicken waffles, and house-made corned beef hash.
  2. Whiskey Jax: Whiskey was one of the first brunch places I ever tried and it’s always a great choice for parties big and small. I love that they have live music every Sunday during brunch and $10 bottomless mimosas make for a great afternoon.
  3. Casa Marina: Casa Marina has a wonderful brunch buffet on Sundays that includes an omelet station, fresh fruit, seafood, and breakfast favorites. While you enjoy your meal seaside you can also enjoy bottomless mimosas or poinsettias which is included in the brunch price.
  4. Blue Fish Restaurant and Oyster Bar: Blue Fish is another fav spot in the heart of Avondale. With each brunch entree, you also can enjoy the cold bar which has fresh fruit, dessert, and appetizers. While enjoying your seafood fix or classic brunch favorite you can sip on $5 bottomless mimosas. Yes, I said $5 how can you resist such a great deal?

Screaming from the rooftop: Jax may not have reached big city status yet but there are great rooftop bars and restaurants that you can enjoy on Sunday afternoons that will make you feel like you’ve almost arrived.

  1. Hoptinger- Five Points: Hoptinger’s riverside location has a great rooftop bar where you can enjoy cocktails, lounge with friends, and shoot a game of pool. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed which is all you need to enjoy a Sunday outing
  2. River and Post: River and Post has one of the best rooftop views in the city to enjoy while you sip delicious cocktails and snack on appetizers. I love their couch sitting that includes a fireplace so that you can still enjoy as temperatures drop.
  3. Cowford Chophouse: Cowford has a great rooftop in the heart of downtown that anyone could love. They have a nice mix of seating types and a full bar to indulge in your favorite cocktail

Baby pass me the hookah: Sunday Funday never ends with brunch and a hookah lounge is a great stop to continue the party with a great group of friends. Jax has a great selection of hookah spots to choose from and here are some of my favorites below!

  1. The Spot: The Spot is a relatively new hookah lounge on Beach blvd and it has a great set up with comfy couches for you and your pals to gather on while you enjoy hookah and drinks. Last time I was there I tried their house glass hookahs and sipped on perfectly blended mimosas. Hard liquor is not sold but there are lots of beer and wine options and huge screens if you want to catch Sunday Game Day.
  2. Taverna Yamas: Yamas is a house favorite for me and my gang and is often our meetup before or after Sunday fun. The plus with Yamas is they have a full bar so that you can enjoy your favorite cocktail, brew, or wine as you pass the hookah around the table.
  3. Casbah: Casbah is another intimate hookah lounge in the heart of historic Avondale. There is inside and outside seating to choose from and plenty of great food to munch on while you laugh over hookah with your closest friends.

Rhythm, Football, and Vibes: Sunday isn’t a fun day without some great music and large screens to watch your favorite football teams. During the fall most Sunday plans include a nice place to watch the game or to enjoy some music, dancing, and drinks.

  1. Lemon Bar: When I think Sunday Funday Lemon Bar is what comes to mind. Its one of the best weekly parties on the coastline with great music and drinks to get the party started and keep it going. Lemon Bar has live music most Sundays for the perfect seaside vibe.
  2. The Daq Shack: My personal favorite Sunday evening spots is The Daq Shack which features a live band every week along with dinner which is complimentary with a drink purchase. Live music is from 7-9 pm every Sunday and dinner is served at 8. There are plenty of TVs inside so you can keep up with your favorite team while you enjoy a signature frozen daiquiri or mixed drink which are 2-4-1 while the band plays.
  3. Miller’s Ale House: I know you might be thinking seriously Jaz Alehouse?!? To my defense, the best outdoor bar in the city belongs to Ale House on the south side making it the best place to watch football on Sundays. They have TV screens all over the restaurant playing multiple games at a time so you can even catch that game that everyone else isn’t watching. They have awesome drink specials and I personally love wings while screaming How ‘Bout Them, Cowboys!

I hope that you plan a fun-filled Sunday soon and check out some of these great spots around Jacksonville. Just grab a group of friends then skip around town and enjoy yourself. Remember life is the greatest love story ever written so don’t be afraid to live it! -Jaz

Secure The Bag

Samsonite Karissa Biz Duffle

If you read my Summer Travel Survival Kit you would know how much I love my LONGCHAMP LE PLIAGE TRAVEL BAG. I have such a strong affection for this bag that I have an original and an expandable one. Recently, my darling roommate while shopping at the Samsonite warehouse sale purchased me a new travel bag as a gift. On my recent weekend trip to ATL with my girls I decided to put the Samsonite Karissa Biz Duffle to the test. The Karissa duffel uses beautiful gold hardware to compliment the navy blue nylon exterior. I loved the number of interior and exterior pockets available to hold items such as chargers, pens, passport, and other travel essentials. I generally use my LONGCHAMP as my personal carry on bag to put under my seat so that I have easy access to a sweater, blanket, iPad, or notebook I might need in flight while also holding any items that I did not want to squeeze into my carry on sized suitcase. The Samsonite duffel has a large capacity so it provided more room than I needed for a personal bag but is the perfect sized weekender if not using a suitcase for road trips and other small getaways. While in the airport I loved the ease of getting certain items out the bag from the interior pockets such as my charger and wallet while waiting in the airport for boarding. The selling feature on this big for me was the smart sleeve which allowed the bag to fit securely on top of my 360 suitcase as I walked through the airport with no worry of falling off or having to carry the bag while trying to catch a connecting flight. The bag has both top handles and an adjustable shoulder strap for easy carrying when not utilizing the smart sleeve with a suitcase. This beautiful bag offers the perfect mix of sleekness and practicability to use during your travels and after my trip I knew I would be adding this duffel to my regular rotation of travel luggage. If you’re looking for a new carry-on bag don’t hesitate to try it out while enjoying the greatest love story written, life. -Jaz

Goal Digger

In January like most people I made goals for myself and placed them on a vision board. I have had decent results using a vision board before but this year I wanted to do better. It took me almost a month to complete my vision board this time around because not only did I have to make myself goals, I pushed myself to also make action steps for each goal. I even told myself that these were not goals I was making but affirmations for my life that I wanted to speak over myself. Since I have been an educator for a few years shy of a decade I am familiar with making smart goals, so I always break my goals into categories such as career, health, or financial before getting specific about them, so I can measure if I have reached it and then set a deadline for completion. Well it’s summer and the year is halfway over, so I decided to see if I was sticking to these goals and affirmations I set for myself. Well first I looked at my vision board and thought “oh no” what have I been doing with my life! The thing with vision boards are that they don’t spell out your goals and timelines or the action steps you have chosen to get there. You may also not have everything on your vision board you want to carry out because you couldn’t find a visual that fit. Thankfully before I even create my vision boards each year I use a journal which I affectionately call my “GOD Did It “Journal to write down goals, actions steps, and notes of gratitude once I achieve something. When I went through my journal I looked at each category of goals and realized I have been crushing it in the career section! I can say that my career was my biggest focus of the year and probably caused me the most stress, and I was relieved to see that I was on track in that area. Then I had to reflect on all the goals that had taken a back seat these first six months if I was going to do majority of what I set out for myself. For this last half of the year I want to put my spiritual and financial goals first since they tie closely together. With my mind set on achieving these other goals I set for myself I will have to buckle down and actually complete the action steps I chose. If you are reflecting on how you are doing so far this year, don’t beat yourself up because you haven’t checked everything off yet but push yourself to get closer to the vision you mapped out for your life. Remember life is the greatest love story ever written so write it out and start living!

If we die, we die together!

If you know me then you know that I love to travel! I look forward to trips I plan each year with my faithful travel buddies. This year I felt a little more adventurous and strayed from my usual small girls trip to Europe for a huge charted carribean vaction. When my girls initally joked about us dying together I would not have guessed that this trip to Tulum, Mexico would be full of crazy memories I would usually be too scared to partake in. So let me be the first to say PEOPLE GET OUT OF YOUR TRAVEL COMFORT ZONE! I want to thank SocialXcapade for organizing an amazing trip to Tulum full of great events and parties that any young minority professional would enjoy. It was so amazing to be so unapologetically black with a huge group of black and brown men women as we explored Mexico together. So lets talk about all the things I did on this trip that gave me close calls

  1. Horseback riding- my horse decided it wanted to fight another horse at the end of the trail and almost threw me off. My horse was not the only horse on a mission to torment the group
  2. Zipline upside down- It just didnt happen but I did let a hand go! Maybe next time ill be extra spicy
  3. Steal Borrow ATVs- we were just ready to go!
  4. Swim in Cenotes- probably the best experience in Mexico but guess what ya’ll I can’t swim! I just didnt let anybody know that as I used all my swimming lesson skills and the life vest to not die as I explored an underwater cave for an hour

My favorite thing about vacation is seeing and trying new things. I’m not big on staying at the resort or hotel because I want to create vivid memories in my life. On top of all the wild adventures I also enjoyed some great parties with some great friends. I think I may even be ready for solo travel soon! Remember life is the greatest love story ever written. -Jaz

Jacksonville Brunch Road Map

Every week someone is asking me “Hey Jaz, what is a good brunch spot?” I always ask what is most important for me them when it comes to brunch then give a short list of suggestions. Well I definitely love brunch and I know you do too but it is definitely a hassle trying to find a spot that has what you need when it comes to bottomless mimosa options, vegan food choices, and accommodating for large parties. Well I plan to help you out by creating the ultimate Jacksonville brunch road map with the most go spots for each neighborhood in town with as much details as I can share about hours, specials, and go to menu items.

Northside

  • New Berlin Fish House and Oyster Bar: Jacksonville should be very familiar with the Fish House family with multiple locations around town. Northside has a great option for brunch to enjoy seafood favorites or brunch classics. The great thing about this place is that you can enjoy bottomless Mimosas or Bloody Mary for just $9 yes that’s right $9. Brunch is served every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm so go out and enjoy!
  • Congaree and Penn: Do you want more than just brunch? Well don’t hesitate to miss out on a real experience by choosing Congaree and Penn a beautiful farm on the North side of town this weekend. The car features a range of ciders, beer, and wine that you can enjoy with your brunch Saturday and Sunday from from 11:00 am to 2:45 pm. Springfield

  • The District: The District is Springfield’s newest and hottest brunch spot that recently revealed that weekend brunch will now feature a mimosa tower that holds 3.5 bottles of champagne and an assortment of juices and fruit. This Walnut street restaurant is perfect for large parties with its large outdoor patio offering traditional tables and chairs, coaches, picnic tables, and most importantly two Yurts for rental. Brunch is offered Saturday and Sunday with $14 Bottomless mimosas from 11 am- 3 pm. They have amazing charcuterie boards and the avocado toast is crowd favorite. If the Florida heat is too much for you there is indoor seating available as well for small parties of 3 or less. My favorite part of Saturday brunch is when there is live music and other friendly tables willing to chat!
  • Silkie’s Chicken and Champagne Bar: Silkie’s is another newly opened restaurant in historic Springfield owned by the famous Chef Kenny Gilbert. This is a Saturday only brunch option since they are closed on Sundays. Silkie’s menu features an assortment of biscuits and weekend special of Chicken and Waffles. If you were wondering yes there are drinks I mean it is champagne bar! Currently the menu includes a variety of champagne cocktails and they even offer bottomless Brut or Rose for $30. If you are looking for a taste bud adventure this is your spot!
  • Uptown Kitchen & Bar: Uptown has been around for a while and they serve breakfast all day everyday from 8 am to 3 pm! The perk of Uptown being more seasoned is that they have a full bar so not only can you enjoy mimosas but you can have a variety of other breakfast cocktails such as a Bloody Mary or Irish Coffee. If you are in Springfield and you are looking for a big range of options to enjoy for brunch then this is your place. Their menu offers items from classic shrimp and grits to vegan tofu scramble. Don’t forget to grab your $20 mimosa bucket too!

Avondale

  • The Blue Fish Restaurant and Oyster Bar: $1 Mimosas anyone? Yes you heard me right! Blue fish is a brunch stable here in the River City offering brunch classics like chicken and waffles, omelets, and Banana Foster french toast along with seafood options like lemon caper cod and my go to shrimp and grits. Outside of the $1 mimosas you can enjoy a few other brunch cocktails such as a peach Bellini or Bloody Mary all for under $5! Don’t forget to grab a brunch cocktail with your crème brûlée french toast or slow braised corned beef hash. Brunch is served every weekend from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm

The great thing is Southern Grounds is not your ordinary coffee shop and features some amazing brunch items such as the grit bowl, brunch burger, or a salmon salad if you want something light. If you are not a latte girl or guy no problem you can enjoy your meal with sangria or mimosas!

Bring on the small plates and let the drinks flow as you enjoy brunch outside on the patio, inside one of the dining rooms, or at the bar. Don’t forget to order some pretzel baked brie with your entree of choice! Did I mention that brunch on Saturday and Sunday special includes bottomless Mimosas, Sangria, and Bloody Mary? There is a two hour sitting limit for brunch but you have from 10′;00 am to 4:00 pm to live your best brunch life.

If you are looking for a great assortment of benedicts to enjoy or their famous shrimp and grits I am sure you will find something between the brunch and lunch menu to satisfy your cravings. The restaurant has a full bar but I personally like to grab a champagne mojito.
  • Restaurant Orsay: Orsay is hands down one of the best dining establishments in Jacksonville. The french restaurant does not disappoint for any meal but weekend brunch is one of my favs. The duck confit hash is always a must for me along with PEI mussels and one of those deviled eggs. Enjoy your meal with the Grand mimosa which is an entire bottle of sparkling and side of orange juice. I always do a little happy dance when I am at Orsay because I feel pure joy at each bite and every sip.

San Marco

  • BB’s: For me Saturday=Brunch even more so than Sunday and BB’s was one the first to feature Saturday brunch (but yes you can go on Sunday too). This is definitely the groovy place to go and enjoy brunch re-imagined for some classic dishes like Crab cake Benedict. There are so many great items to enjoy and please don’t forget to grab a slice of cake on your way out. Oh yea they bottomless mimosas too!
  • Town Hall: Town Hall is the sister restaurant to Prati Italia but it definitely makes sure to make a name for itself. There is a variety of food options such as the crispy brussels sprouts which are my favorite starters, crab cake benedict, fried chicken biscuit, or cauliflower steak for the vegan in your group.
  • Taverna: Taverna is usually on my list for happy hour but it has slipped onto my weekend brunch list too. You will want to try out the scone of the day before indulging in brunch entrees from breakfast pizza, lemon-ricotta pancakes, or steak and eggs. Just like during happy hour there are some great cocktails to enjoy while you brunch!
  • Maple Street Biscuit Company: Maple street may be one of Jax’s fav breakfast chains serving those famous biscuits. I always loved that Maple Street featured both sausage and shiitake gravy to soak up your biscuit but there are so many toppings to choose from to make a great morning meal. If you are not into biscuits that’s cool they also offer waffles, bowls, and salads.
  • Florida Cracker Kitchen: This Florida born restaurant features some great southern breakfast classics that you want to experience. Tuesday-Sunday from 7 am to 2:30 pm you can stop into either Jax location and enjoy some of their world famous signature dishes such as 10,000 island shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, and one of my fav the Florida cowboy class (I loved corned beef!). The San Marco location has a full bar and their mason jar mimosa is one of their signature drinks.

Riverside

  • The Bread & Board: Bread & Board is one Jacksonville’s newest fast casual chains taking the city by storm. Each Sunday starting at 11 am B&B serves up some brunch favorites which include biscuits and gravy, Cajun red fish and grits, and quiche. You can also enjoy one of their great sandwiches or boards while you are there.
  • Black Sheep Restaurant: Black Sheep is one of the original rooftop restaurants in town and its certainly a must try. Black Sheep uses many local farm partners from across the state including Conagree and Penn. Saturday-Sunday you can enjoy steak and egg or avocado toast and don’t forget to order my fav starter poutine (it’s sooo good). Wash down brunch with either a mimosa, beermosa, or signature cocktail.

Breakfast and lunch is served 7 days a week from 6:30 am to 2:15 pm
  • Another Broken Egg: One of Jax long standing brunch places with four locations around town is Another Broken Egg. Open from 7 am to 2 pm daily they serve breakfast favorites, sandwiches, salads, and numerous specialty cocktails. There is also a full menu of gluten free options which is a big win for gluten-free eaters like myself. Don’t forget to order yourself a mimosa pitcher or spiked cold brew to go with your meal.
  • Keke’s Breakfast Cafe: Keke’s was always one my go to breakfast spots when I was home in Orlando so I was very excited to see the chain expand to the first coast. Keke’s is known for their big portion (especially those pancakes). My go to is always an omelet and there are so many options including a build your own option. Everyday from 7 am to 2:30 check out Keke’s for some amazing brunch options.
  • Metro Diner: Metro Diner has been a Jacksonville favorite for years. Who hasn’t heard about those famous chicken and waffles?!? Metro Diner has always been my friends and I top choice for a Saturday brunch because we will always leave satisfied and full and can pop your own champagne to create those just right mimosas. There is always a great weekly special and all-around great dishes such as the Charleston shrimp and grits and avocado toast. hopefully your wait isn’t too long with your choice of five locations around town.
  • Ida Claire: This Texas based restaurant has gotten plenty of buzz since it opened here in Jacksonville. Ida Claire make sure to serve southern fare with many dining areas like that eye-catching retro trailer van on the patio. I always like to start with the fried green tomatoes and I try to explore for my main dish between the shrimp and grits, duck and potato hash, or red velvet pancakes. There are so many drinks to enjoy with your meal too and I’m not talking just mimosas, I enjoy sharing a punch bowl with my friends from time to time as well. Ida Claire is one of the best options for large groups to have those lit summer brunch gatherings.
  • Whiskey Jax: I won’t deny on a last minute brunch decision on a Saturday or Sunday I am most likely pulling up to Whiskey Jax. It’s a local restaurant that never skips out on flavorful food or a nice strong drink. I always find it hard to decide between the shrimp and grits, corned beef hash, or crab cake benedict because they are all so good! Did I mention $12 bottomless mimosas and they make sure it stays bottomless any flavor you wish!
  • Prati Italia: Chef Tom of Prati has been long standing restaurant curator in Jacksonville launching Moxie Kitchen and Town Hall before this latest concept Prati Italia. The brunch menu isn’t extensive however there are options for your dietary needs from vegan to gluten-free and even pizza. To top it off they have $5 mimosas and bellinis and the patio seating is perfect on a sunny day.
